Final Evaluation

Throughout this entire project I've enjoyed not only the aspect of learning new makeup techniques and hair styles but also the thought of learning the historical side to do with them. I've realised I really enjoy blogging which is why I've chosen the option of writing for my topic next year as I think it would be extremely rewarding. The first half of the project was a big learning curve as I only really knew the Victorian era through films and books; I really enjoyed researching into Queen Victoria and found her life extremely interesting and emotional. The topic of Great Expectations was new having to learn about continuity being new to makeup anyway, continuity though will be one of those skills that will take me a while to learn as its so diverse I enjoyed myself though. The second and more resent part of the project was a true challenge as it tested not only our skills in makeup but also our imaginations. I find that for me personally I have a tonne of ideas but sometimes find it hard to express them properly through talking to even writing down. With this project I was excited from the start go being a huge face of the genre of television horror and found myself smiling at the list given having watch most of the series on there. The ideas for Claudia and Quentin I think are believable and in depth with the series I chose of True Blood; the show itself is extremely diverse and full of different roots I could of headed down. The final shoots were a lot of fun, a lot of planning had gone into my characters looks and persona's being picky on who I want to model my character as I had such a vision in my head. The makeup for each shoot was how I wanted from planning and practicing. I enjoyed location shooting but the studio images quality are more professional which I prefer. Overall this project has been really enjoyable I'm looking forward to next year.

Claudia Shoot Final Images

Claudia, The vampire who has had some kind of mental breakdown. Extremely immature but also with the tendency to cry blood at old films and bake cakes in her apartment this women sounds harmless.... until you react in a way that makes her switch and become the monster that in being held in denial behind those eyes. None of the photos have been edited. In the shoot I kept asking my model to be really expressive with different kinds of emotions; Claudia herself is a roller coaster when it comes to how she feels, her whole existence for thirty years has been a huge charade played by the people who imprisioned her. Claudia's personality can switch extremely fast; nobody wants to get in the way of an extremely old vampire princess.

Evaluation

This shoot was a lot of fun; over the entire project I had had a idea of what I wanted from my Claudia but then I found myself being to picky in my choosing. In the end I asked my model who is also a close friend because she has the innocent girly look that I had always wanted, my model worked hard in conveying Claudia's personality in which I had described to her. The makeup itself I'm pleasantly surprised with I always had the fear of making her look to heavy and done up with the makeup I had chosen as it is extreme is many aspects for wondering about ones New Orleans flat/underground prison. I decided not to add the vein onto her neck as I decided it would look to much and be covered by the hair, I think the rest of Claudia can give an audience the feeling of something being different with any normal character. Claudia's look was a mix up of her eighties lifestyle and iconic people but also had a mix of retro that being from her love for old films such as the classics 'Gone with the wind' in which she idolises. The hair was inspired by Sophie-Ann who is married to Claudia's father for a time, the hair is pinned to one side with brushed out curls; I decided to accessorise Claudia's hair with a little hello kitty clip to add to the idea of immaturity, like a little girl would have in her hair. I chose the green backdrop for the shoot as I wanted it to pop again the yellow something quirky like her Kitsch style apartment. Overall I'm pleased with the outcome of Claudia, she is exactly what I wanted when I imaged her initially.

Quentin Shoot Final Images

I did this shoot on location in my house; lucky enough for me my parents taste is quite eccentric and colourful so thinking of a location to shoot wasn't difficult. I decided to shoot my design for Quentin on location because I wanted to convey his ghostly persona, he wasn't one to be against a studio backdrop but with natural lighting. I shoot the images in my bathroom because the lighting in there is really bright but also the colour scheme of the room could be considered kitsch.

I think my model for Quentin was spot in with the look I had planned and seen originally in my head. I wanted the makeup to be subtle and natural on his skin with the detailing giving the audience the feeling of something being wrong with the character. I really like this lighting too. In other images the makeup is much clearer as a detail aspect such as his heavy eye bags. Something about this image though works best; its almost like he's looking desperately into your eyes helpless.

Evaluation

My character design on Quentin for me was something that had come into my head rather early on in the project. My only problem was projecting that idea into a clear design. Quentin in my eyes had the potential to be something big but he wasted himself away trying to be something he idolised in the vampire world. The costuming for Quentin is inspired by the era he died in but also takes a huge chunk from the Rockabilly 'greaser' fashion. The makeup for Quentin was pretty spot on to the facial chart that I had planned the only problem was showing the makeup clearly for camera as for me it looks a little light compared to how it really was. If I could redo this shoot I'd make the eye bags more striking out. The costuming and hair though is what I had planned. Does he look like a vampire? well for me in True Blood the vampires don't especially look to different from humans thats the whole point. Claudia's imagination of Quentin is exactly what decade she still thinks it is the eighties, I think the shoot overall was successful

Quentin Face Charts

The face charts for Quentin were quite simple in there designs I wanted each face chart to have the hint of a injury though onto the face reflecting Quentin's violent end at the hands of Claudia.

In this chart I looked at the idea of having some kind of wound on Quentin's forehead made from a wax and latex mould, The lips also would be bloody. Like Claudia Quentin would also have eye bags in which look heavier then in Claudia's design.

This next design I focused more on the idea of making Quentin looking gaunt and dehydrated; like a starved vampire that is lusting over his next feed.Theres also a bruising on his neck that could show injury or some kind of substance abuse.  I like this design but I don't believe it suited the character profile enough.

In the end this is the design I went for with Quentin, The veins on the head look a little dark in the photo but I decided to add them as a feature to show how reliant vampires are on blood to highlight his needs whilst being alive; being hungry for more power and a reputation in the vampire world, the veins coming out on his temples also reflect sickness and death on Quentin's ghostly character.

My Mrs.Laderman

I decided to create a Mrs Laderman facial chart because I was interested personally in what she would actually look like once conveyed to paper from mind. in the brief Mrs Laderman is described as.....

"Claudia’s neighbour in her 40’s. She alternately changes into a variety alter egos and is Claudia’s friend and confidant. Living in the apartment opposite, she was Claudia’s only link to the outside world. Although they are friends there is suspicion that Mrs L’, has designs on Quentin. In fact she has designs on Claudia."

Now for my plan for Mrs Laderman character was to make her one of Claudia's feeders and wannabe vampire who poses as one of her neighbours. Mrs Laderman is scared of her ageing she has tried many products and procedures to stay youthful but her age is starting to creep up onto her youthfulness with wrinkles. Mrs Laderman see's Claudia as her chance to make it big; get in with Claudia and your basically in with a royal. The prospect of living forever appeals to Mrs Laderman. Mrs Laderman within her looks is middle aged, attractive but always striving to look like the newest supermodels or celebrity she see's in the media. Of course as a "neighbour' Mrs Laderman's clothing is in fitting with the decade it is meant to be in the apartment. The makeup is also extreme for everyday like Claudia as she wants to bond with Claudia having this wannabe plan in mind. A subtle horror theme is the bloody plaster upon Mrs Laderman's neck in which she has to change a lot a day; there is also slight bruising around her neck. Mrs Ladermans entire look is based on Claudia even her hair is similar in style; she wants to bond with Claudia closely. Mrs Laderman's personality is extremely sensual she has used her sexuality to get a place in with the vampires even as a wannabe Mrs Laderman has big plans for her and Claudia. Mrs Laderman in fact is risking her life every day because she desires being a vampire so much. Like Claudia Mrs Laderman is quite clearly unhinged in how she see's her perspective on life. No one will stop her dreams.

Characters Costuming Claudia & Quentin

Claudia

Claudia is dressed very femininely, in a yellow dress with white collar detail much like the two images above; much like the character Claudia has envisioned herself having being a home maker who is spending her time cooking and watching television around the flat she is in complete denial in a way to who she truly is and what she does to people in fits of anger. The dress itself is very similar to both looking that of the 50's era. In Claudia's hair she will also have some little clips where the side of her hair is swept back, I'm using little hello kitty clips to reflect Claudia's childlike personality.

Quentin

                         Wild at Heart                                                      Biker Jacket

Quentin's outfit chose is a little more detailed then Claudia's. I have taken a large inspiration from Quentin's Rockabilly bad boy image from movie stars like John Travolta in Grease with his biker jacket with his classic good looks and clear rockabilly "Greaser" style. Quentin's fashion then takes in another era completely with his icon snake skin shirt in which has been inspired by Nicolas Cages character as Sailor Ripley in "Wild at heart" with Cages characters extremely iconic snake skin jacket, the amount of passion and danger in the film made me think of it the tale of two lovers. I want Quentin much like Claudia to clearly be inspired by films but also in a way wanted him to have this dreamy male lead persona in which Claudia has clearly seen and become obsessed with. The tale of Quentin is a happy ending. In Quentin's ear will also be a little ring earring.

Claudia Facial Charts

Creating the character in my head was complete, now what had to be done was conveying my character, her personality and story within the makeup and hair. For Claudia I've always had a requirement for what sort of model I could use to make the character believable; Someone who is attractive and seen as classically pretty but also someone who looks youthful and innocent The makeup for Claudia would always juxtapose the hair that is inspired by Claudia's love for old cinema. Heavy and bright is what I want the looks have been inspired by the era in which Claudia is forever trapped in... the eighties.

As I had already planned a hair style for Claudia I decided to draw the design on my face chart just to help me have more of a realistic picture in my head of a finished effect.

My first initial face chart I designed is pretty close to what I have envisioned in my head, heavy bronzer and blush high on the cheekbones. The eyeshadow is actually different shades of pinks and a black current shade the quality of picture is rather bad, I blame my dark room for this though. The lips are lined with spice and then filled in with a bit of spirit and also a white chromatographic pencil to highlight. I've included a beauty spot also because Claudia's entire look is based on what she sees on others, the beauty spot for example was huge in the 50's on Marilyn Monroe but also the 80's with Madonna and supermodels like Cindy Crawford showcasing the beauty spot with glamour.

I love this look but I felt after reflection that the lips weren't bold enough with the rest of the look.

THE HAIR. what on earth happened haha; this look was definitely the worst for me, I made the mistake of using a cream blush on the paper and it didnt blend properly to what I wanted. This makeup was slightly more dramatic with the red lip and winged eyeliner. After finishing I decided that I didnt think there was enough eyeshadow and the colour choice was wrong. The red lip though got me thinking and I decided that a red lip was what I wanted for Claudia, a shiny red lip.

With the face chart I decided to include the subtle hint of Claudia having deep purple eye bags underneath all her makeup. I want the audience to notice this as a hint to the characters story not looking as perfect as it does in Claudia's head. The act of 30 years imprisionment taking its toll on this immortal.

This look was just a bit of fun I was in a way testing my characters look, how far would Claudia go? she loves music and what she sees on the television screen in her apartment. I think Claudia is quite experimental with her makeup and what she wants to try, this look itself has a clear David Bowie Star Man in its inspiration. This look I wouldn't do for my final image because I want my Claudia makeup to be her everyday; the makeup she would have on True Blood. The red lip is slightly stained around her mouth which I like almost as if she's been eating in a rather enthusiastic starving manner or someones had to subdue her. Again there is a subtleness of eye bags underneath her makeup; the toll of being drugged so many times is starting to show.

This face chart is very similar to the first face chart I created, heavy bronzer and blusher that are dramatically on the cheekbones and temple. The eyeshadow are actually the same colours though the darker current shade is used then the first chart. yet again image quality is rubbish compared to what the face chart actually looks like. The main difference is the red lips stick in which I've decided to use with a small smudge on her face. I've also designed much like my Quentin designs the clear veins on her neck to show sickness and the drugs taking ahold of her, being subdued after a violent outburst her body's need for substance much like you actually see in drug users bodies the bruised damaged veins. I decided to include Quentin with these veins as he is Claudia's euphoria.

The eyeshadow itself in the picture is different being a mix of pinks and purples but also with some Urban Decay glitter shadows in pink and purple that are on the brow bone and also underneath the eye to make for a more girly look. This face chart will be my guideline for Claudia, once written and planned properly of course.

True Blood Powerpoint presentation

As part of the development for our project and deciding how to create my version of Claudia & Quentin within the program of True Blood we had to present a five minute presentation to the class in which we expressed our ideas and large details we were planning.

Quentin Hair

Quentin's hair is that inspired by that of the classic rockabilly look; much like Claudia and her look that is inspired by her age and what she sees on the television. My model I decided to use was in fitting with the character I had designed for True Blood, the dark hair that was long enough to style. In fact I thought of my model pretty soon into the project planning. The hair itself will be pretty simple to do. As I'm shooting my shoot with Quentin at home I'll ask my model to wash his hair before I start to style it. The hair then will be slicked back using gel when went then blowdrying dry to hold.

Hair Chart's
All the hair charts have been designed with the inspiration above. all classic in styling with rockabilly quiffs.

Chart one is extremely neat with a small side parting, parting the quiff and sides of the hair. The front of the hair itself is then left slightly textured. I've included the bearding detailing as my model will have a light one and slight shadowing.

In this design the beard is exactly the same. The hairstyle is dried different aiming more for a slightly off the middle quiff.

This design will be the one I've decided to use for my Quentin shoot/character. I decided to make the quiff a little different and not completely up with the detailing of a few loose hairs placed on the forehead so the hair itself looks slightly more rugged and lived in. I don't want my Quentin to look like he's just walked out a hair salon. The bearding on the design is also similar to the rest of the designs having not a clean shaven face but a extremely short covering.

Claudia Hair

Claudia pretty and naive with a deadly spark that you don't want to be on the other end of. Claudia herself is a mix of different era's within her style. Bright makeup inspired by her favourite pop stars like Madonna and Cyndi Lauper who she idolises. The hair itself I decided to go for more of a 'retro' aspect with it; having Claudia idolise the old style movies in which she watches for a lot of the day I decided much like a child wanting to look like a adult Claudia idolising these old film sirens. The glamorous brushed out curls, pinned at one side. I've included the mix of different decades because there should always be the subtle hit of Claudia in fact being a vampire, a very old vampire yes she's lost but she's also lived and seen many changes from fashionable to huge scale humanity changes. Claudia without knowing it is trapped in a almost groundhog day scenario the vampire community have declared her unfit for the out side, from even most vampires themselves yet she still hasn't realised. I will be doing pretty much what my inspired photo's are to my models hair for the shoot, a bit inspiration for me throughout the project was Sophie-Ann the character in True Blood played by Rachel Evan Wood; not only does she have beauty about her but theres also the sense of immense immaturity when looking at episodes with her in. Much like Claudia Sophie-Ann has never truly grown up which is extremely unfavourable for a queen. I'm going to include as a almost contrast with the hair a couple of childish hair clips in suiting with Claudia's personality. For someone who will quite possibly stay as a immortal forever I think its important to show the looseness and venerability of my character; Can Claudia handle what she is? Clearly not. Claudia herself will always try to look neat but underneath all the makeup and hair there will be clear and definite cracks clearly shown in the final images whether with a a couple of stray hairs or the toll of 30 years heavy drugging and suppressing Claudia will be a ticking time bomb.

Hair Design
Having of designed most of my face charts before hair I had already had a main idea on how I wanted the hair. I enjoy creating a bit of detailing on the face charts as it for me makes my character feel more realistic. Taking clear retro inspiration I have designed a couple of similar looks.

Each style of hair I've drawn up will be created by curling and brushing out the red haired design would be the most brushed out but also has a longer length of hair, this design has been taken from the Kate Moss 20's image in my little mood hair board. My idea model will have mid length hair much like in my face chart designs. The hair will be side parted like all of these designs. The top blonde haired design is ringleted at the bottom in a almost spiral; I'd achieve this look whilst completely my model and design for Claudia by pinning the ends to cool until I shoot. The bottom brunette design has the same fringe as the blonde this would be achieved using a slightly small tong then the rest of the hair and then pinning in a curve much like Sophie-Ann's hair in True Blood who has be my overall hair inspiration.

Quentin Mood Board

Quentin, the 'heart throb' classically handsome though he knows it; Quentin was up and coming in the vampire community socially, he has ties not only with Eric Northman but also king of Mississippi Russell Edgington Claudia's father. The mood board I've created not only for me represents Quentins style but also the clear youthfulness of himself. Much like the neighbours Quentin himself is a bit of a wannabe he wants the best, he see's his chance to make it big getting in with Claudia. Is Quentin actually gay? Quentin it seems like many vampires see's sex with whoever as something as needed as water is to humans. Quentin was extremely handsome. I've included the strong sense of greaser style and the vintage lighter due to Quentin being turned into a vampire in the 50's after returning to American after the war had ended. Quentin did meet a very bloody and violent end, as many True Blood fans know when a vampire dies they basically disintegrate into blood and muscle, Quentin himself had a painful end in Claudia's flat before turning into a bloody mess.
